Dear QSI Community,
Many of you know that our community developed a vision statement last year that helps guide our decision-making. We work hard to approach this aspirational pronouncement. Our vision statement reads:
QSI International School of Astana is an inclusive community of learners who strive for genuine collaboration, deep connections, and inspired creativity seeking solutions to real problems. We care about each other and our world.
In addition to our vision statement, our faculty created a set of group norms that define how we interact in our community in order to embody our vision statement. In our norms, we commit to:
Doing our job
Being clear and healthy in communication and behavior
Assuming positive intent of our colleagues, parents, and students
Setting clear expectations for ourselves and our students
Listening to, trusting, supporting, and respecting each other
Building an inclusive environment through continual improvement in inclusive education
Ensuring that QSI Astana is a community center
I share these with you to state this is the kind of community we seek to cultivate. We recognize that we have areas of growth in order for us to become what we hope to become. We aspire to be the kind of learning community that makes a real difference in the lives and destinies of our students, faculty, staff, and parents. Thank you for joining us in pursuit of this worthy endeavor.

Statement of Purpose
Mastery Learning
According to Structural Learning, “Mastery in Maths is an approach to teaching and learning that aims for children to develop a deep understanding of Maths rather than memorising key concepts or resorting to rote learning.” Our current mathematics curriculum is inspired by the works of Carol Dweck, an American psychologist known for her work on growth mindset and Jo Boaler, A Stanford University professor and author of books like the Mathematical Mindsets and Limitless Minds. Based on her extensive research in the field, Jo Boaler professes that the important parts of a successful mathematics classroom are mistakes, struggles, creativity, flexibility, and equity. The key features of teaching and learning to achieve mastery in a mathematics class entail the following:
Exploring and investigation,
Problem solving in a collaborative environment,
Critical thinking with justifications and logical reasoning,
Applying the learning to real-life scenarios,
Repeated attempts to achieve mastery at a high level with time being a resource,
Regular formative assessments,
Enrichment/Extenstion activities,
Individual/small group instruction and safety-netting, and
Differentiating as needed.
